A beautiful first printing of BG-8, the poster advertising a May 1966 concert featuring Andy Warhol, the Velvet Underground & Nico with Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco. Designed by the legendary Wes Wilson, who invented the psychedelic concert poster, this is the absolutely first printing, as designated by Eric King in his guide. This poster comes the collection of the late Ralph J. Gleason (1917-1975;) one of the most influential jazz and pop music critics of all time. He was a central figure in the San Francisco rock scene, helped organize the Monterey Pop Festival, and co-founded Rolling Stone magazine. Bill Graham himself credited Gleason with suggesting the Fillmore Auditorium to him as a site for concerts, while the Family Dog met with Gleason at his home to discuss their idea to stage dance concerts, prior to their first show at the Longshoreman's Hall. Gleason would pick up posters at the shows he was reviewing, and occasionally folded them in quarters to fit in his famous trench-coat. This is one of those, and while it has a single vertical and horizontal crease across the middle, it has been stored flat since the show and lays perfectly flat–and the creases are not very noticeable. The colors are fresh as the day it was printed, as this poster, which is prone to fading, has been stored in a stack since the week of the show. There are no pinholes or other issues of any kind. This is a rare opportunity to obtain a poster from the personal collection of one of the key figures of the San Francisco Scene.
