A handwritten postcard from Velvet Underground guitarist Sterling Morrison to his future wife, sent while the band was playing The Vulcan Gas Company in Austin, Texas; with Morrison’s personal handbill advertising those shows.

Morrison’s note to the future Martha Morrison (maiden name Dargan) conveys the boredom of life on the road; he writes “Hi! Nothing much doing today, no football games or anything.  The TV has only one channel.  Somebody is coming around to interview me and then I guess I’ll go look for a Mexican restaurant.  We have been playing well.  Be good. Love, S.”

The card, picturing the University of Texas Tower, is postmarked October 25, 1969; the Velvets played The Vulcan Gas Company on October 23-25.  (Coincidentally, after Lou Reed left the group, Morrison moved to Austin to attend the University of Texas, where he taught and earned a PHD in medieval literature.)

Also included is Morrison’s personal handbill from the Vulcan shows (it’s the version with an add on the back for a local head shop, Oat Willie’s.)

Postcard in very good condition, with light toning and a pinhole at the top center of the photo.  Just under 3 1/2″ x 5 1/2″.  Handbill in excellent condition with tack holes in the corners.  8 1/2″ x 10 5/8″.
