Velvet Underground/Andy Warhol/Frank Zappa/Tim Leary – “Nightbeat Magazine Freakout” 1966 Handbill
A previously undocumented handbill for the NIGHTBEAT MAGAZINE FREAKOUT, held at the Action House in Long Island, New York, on December 4, 1966.
This little documented event featured live performances by The Velvet Underground & Nico, The Mothers of Invention (with Frank Zappa), The Ronettes, The Shangra-La’s, The Left Banke, The Fugs, Terry Knight and the Pack, The Vagrants, and others, as well as appearances by Andy Warhol and Timothy Leary, Warhol star Baby Jane Holzer, and Monti Rock III. Not to mention Anna Venturi (“The topless girl from the Crystal Room doing her entire act.”)
Only one copy of the small type-only poster advertising this event has ever surfaced (we discovered it years ago in the collection of Zappa’s first manager) but this handbill was unknown before we found it in the scrapbook of the late Velvet Underground guitarist Sterling Morrison. The handbill measures 8 1/2″ x 11″ and is in very good condition, with some glue stains on the back from being previously adhered to the scrapbook. As this is a previously undocumented item, we have watermarked this scan, but the original of course is unmarked.
A unique Velvet Underground/Warhol/Leary/Mothers collectible with incredible provenance. Our letter of authenticity will note that this is part of the Sterling Morrsion archive.
