Woodstock Festival – Original Large Poster Signed by Promoter Michael Lang
An original large-size concert poster advertising the Woodstock Festival of Music and Art/An Aquarian Exposition (popularly known simply as “Woodstock”,) held August 15, 16 and 17, 1969 in White Lake, New York. This poster is from the collection of original Woodstock promoter Michael Lang, who has signed it in the lower left corner, and written an accompanying letter of authenticity. The Woodstock Festival is popularly seen as the greatest rock festival ever and it’s easy to see why; the lineup included Jimi Hendrix, The Who, The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Sly & The Family Stone, The Band, Crosby Stills & Nash, the Jefferson Airplane, Joe Cocker and many others.
Arnold Skolnick’s classic poster for the Woodstock Festival has been reprinted and bootlegged many times, but this is an absolutely original first printing with impeccable provenance, coming from the archive of the original promoter of Woodstock. We obtained this directly Michael Lang, who signed this poster at our request, and wrote in his accompanying letter of authenticity “I was the promoter of the 1969 Woodstock Festival and have had this poster in my possession since taking it home 2 days after the festival ended.”
Original posters for the Woodstock Festival were printed in two sizes; this is the larger one (24″ x 36″,) and this example is in exceptional near mint condition. It has the three printing irregularities that appear only on the original large size posters, of course (see below.) An unusual opportunity to obtain a signed Woodstock poster with an exceptional history.
(ALL authentic large size Woodstock posters have the following printing irregularities:
1. On the inside edge of the right hand stem of the “M” in “MUSIC”, where the stem makes a 45 degree angle back to the left, there is a tiny dotjust inside the white ink. It is no bigger than a tiny pin hole, and is very close to the peak in the red ink.
2. There is a white speck to the left of the finger closest to the left edge. This speck is 1″ up from the bottom of the blue band, and is less than 1/8″ from the left edge of the poster that is 23 3/4″ wide, and 1/4″-3/8″ from the left edge of the poster that is 24″ wide.
3. There is a tiny white dot in the top stem of the “3”. It is roughly in the middle of the orange ink, and is 3/8″ from the left edge of the “3”. This one is difficult to find. You’ll need really good light, and may even need some magnification.)
