Horace Silver – 1961 Signed Village Gate NYC Contract / From Charlie Watts Collection (Rolling Stones)

A Shaw Artists/American Federation of Musicians contract for a series of August, 1961 weekend shows by jazz great Horace Silver at New York’s Village Gate, hand signed by the legendary pianist and Village Gate owner Art D’Lugoff.

This was part of the legendary jazz collection of Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts (1941-2022); and sold at auction in 2023 by Christie’s, London.

This is the club’s carbon copy with Horace Silver and Art D’Lugoff’s original signatures; Silver played from 9:30 PM until 2:30 AM the weekends of August 11 & 12 and 18 & 19, and was paid $1,400 for the run.

Just three months earlier, Silver had recorded his classic Blue Note live album Doin’ the Thing at the Village Gate.  It was the only live album released featuring the “classic” Horace Silver Quintet, with Blue Mitchell, Junior Cook, Gene Taylor and Roy Brooks.

This contract was sold as part of Lot 507 in the Christie’s auction Charlie Watts: Gentleman, Collector, Rolling Stone.

With Recordmecca’s written lifetime guarantee of authenticity noting that this was part of the Charlie Watts collection, and a copy of the Christie’s lot label.  8 1/2″ x 11″.
