Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, The Who, Yes, Fleetwood Mac, Etc – 1968 Marquee Club Membership Card
A very rare 1968 membership card for London’s legendary Marquee Club, expiring December 31, 1968 . The Marquee was the most important club in London, and 1968 was a prime era, as evidenced by the bands who played there during this time.
This card–essentially a year long discount ticket– enabled the bearer to see club performances that year by an astounding array of musicians, including David Bowie, Led Zeppelin (their second UK show, billed as the New Yardbirds), Yes, The Who (who had a Tuesday night residency ending April 23), Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, Jeff Beck, Traffic, Jethro Tull, Taste with Rory Gallagher, The Moody Blues and many many others. And most of these groups returned to the club multiple times during the year.
Other groups who played The Marquee during that period include Fairport Convention, Joe Cocker, Procol Harum, Family, John Mayall’s Blues Breakers (with Mick Taylor,) The Move (who recorded their ‘Something Else’ EP live there in February and May,) The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, Ten Years After, The Herd (with Peter Frampton,) Al Stewart, Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation, The Iveys (Badfinger,) The Nice, Brian Auger Julie Driscoll & The Trinity, Savoy Brown, Skip Bifferty, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Chicken Shack, The Gods, and Simon Dupree & The Big Sound (pre-Gentle Giant.) And many many others.
