Lee Morgan Quintet w/Clifford Jordan – 1968 Concert Poster from Charlie Watts Collection (Rolling Stones) / African American Fashion Show

A rare cardboard boxing-style concert poster advertising a January 1968 Jazz and Fashions concert featuring the Lee Morgan Quintet at the Westbury Social Club in Westbury, New York.

This was part of the legendary jazz collection of Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts (1941-2022); and sold at auction in 2023 by Christie’s, London.

According to the Lee Morgan Chronology 1956-1972 published by the University of Michigan Press, at this point Morgan’s Quintet included Clifford Jordan, Ronnie Mathews, Victor Sproles and Billy Higgins (the last three of which played on Morgan’s classic album The Rumproller.) And at some point during this January, Morgan moved in with his common-law wife Helen, who four years later shot him outside Slugs Saloon.

Sharing the bill was a fashion show featuring ‘African Fashions by Fatima and Syeeda” and ‘Fashions in Vogue by D’Sellers.’

This poster was sold as part of Lot 571 in the Christie’s auction Charlie Watts: Gentleman, Collector, Rolling Stone.

An exceptional Lee Morgan collectible, with superb provenance.  With Recordmecca’s written lifetime guarantee, and the Christie’s lot label.

In excellent condition, with the year ‘1968’ written in ink  to the right of ‘Jan; 28’. 14″ x 22″
