Miles Davis – 17″ x 20″ David Gahr Photograph of ‘Jack Johnson’ Album Cover

A stunning oversize limited edition photograph of Miles Davis with saxophonist Gary Bartz, in concert at Tanglewood, Massachusetts, by acclaimed photographer David Gahr (1922-2008).

A retouched version of this image, with Bartz and the background removed, was used on the cover of Davis’ acclaimed 1971 album A Tribute to Jack Johnson, and in 2012 on a United States postage stamp, and by the French postal system (see photos for reference only.)

The print is numbered 19/25 and stamped bottom center ‘Estate of David Gahr.”

In Near Mint condition, rolled as sent by Gahr’s studio.  There are two small soft creases, one in the top left corner, and the other to the left of Miles’ foot (see close-ups), that won’t be noticeable when framed. Sheet 17″ x 22″, image 13 1/8″ x 19 1/2″.

A similar unsigned, stamped version of this photograph sold at auction in 2023 for $3125.

David Gahr is well known for his photographs of Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Miles Davis, Johnny Cash, Eric Clapton, Jerry Garcia and many other musical luminaries.  The New York Times called Gahr “among the pre-eminent photographers of American folk, blues, jazz and rock musicians of the 1960s and beyond”.
