Stan Getz – 1962 Signed Village Gate NYC Contract / From Charlie Watts Collection (Rolling Stones)

An Associated Musicians of New York contract for a series of October, 1962 shows by jazz great Stan Getz at New York’s Village Gate, hand signed by the legendary saxophonist.

This was part of the legendary jazz collection of Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts (1941-2022); and sold at auction in 2023 by Christie’s, London.

This is the club’s carbon copy with Getz’s original signature; Getz played three shows nightly from October 12-20, and was paid $2,775 for the run.

Just six months earlier, Getz had released his hit album with guitarist Charlie Byrd Jazz Samba. As Wikipedia notes, Jazz Samba signaled the beginning of the bossa nova craze in America. Stan Getz was the featured soloist and the tracks were arranged by Charlie Byrd, who had first heard bossa nova during a tour of Brazil in 1961.

This contract was sold as part of Lot 507 in the Christie’s auction Charlie Watts: Gentleman, Collector, Rolling Stone.

With Recordmecca’s written lifetime guarantee of authenticity noting that this was part of the Charlie Watts collection, and a copy of the Christie’s lot label.  8 1/2″ x 11″.
