The original photograph used to create the cover for the Crusaders 1979 smash album Street Life, signed and titled “Original Album Art” by photographer Jayme Odgers.

Street Life, the most succesful album of the Crusaders long career, was a Top 20 album on Billboard’s Pop, Jazz, and Black album charts.  The title track, featuring Randy Crawford, was a Top 40 pop single and Top 20 soul hit.

This beautiful large format print was used to create the iconic Street Life album cover, and acquired directly from photographer, Jayme Odgers.  Odgers noted he kept his original artwork, and provided the Crusader’s label, MCA Records, with a large format transparency of the image.  MCA then added the group’s name at the top and ret0uched the type on the valet parking sign to read “Rodeo Drive” (The photograph was taken at 409 N Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.)

While Odgers created cover art for artists including Fleetwood Mac, Gary Wright and The Floaters, he is best known as a graphic designer.  His work has been shown at the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco, the Brooklyn Museum, the Arco Center for the Visual Arts and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Examples were included in the Walker Art Center’s landmark show, Posters of the Centuries: Design of the Avant Garde, and reside in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewett National Design Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum and The White House.
