David Bowie & William S. Burroughs – Dual Signed Photograph From ‘Rolling Stone’ Interview

A page from Rolling Stone’s February, 1974 issue, featuring the article Beat Godfather Meets Glitter Mainman: William Burroughs Interviews David Bowie, autographed by both Bowie and Burroughs.

The page was signed for Canadian music journalist Jeffrey Morgan, who explains in his accompanying letter of authenticity:

The first time I met William S. Burroughs was in February 1974, during which time I asked him to autograph a photograph of himself standing next to David Bowie. As he signed his name in the available space over his head, Burroughs drawled: “You oughtta get Booey to sign the other half.”

When Booey showed up in town later that year on June 16th for his Diamond Dogs tour, I did just that by sneaking into a side door before the matinee performance. It was a guerrilla technique I often used during the ’70s whenever security was lax to meet other musicians, ranging from Kiss to Cab Calloway.

“You’re not supposed to be in here, you know,” a woman said walking up to me backstage. “I know,” I said, showing her the signed photo, “but William Burroughs thought that I should get the other half of this signed.”

She looked at the photo, looked at me, then looked back at the photo. “Wait here,” she said, taking the photo with her.

After a few minutes, she waved me over to where Bowie was standing with the photo in his hand. “Bill signed this?” he asked.

“When I met him in February,” I replied. “He thought you should sign it too.” At which point I added: “I think that you and Burroughs are two of the world’s greatest living writers.”

Smiling to himself, Bowie signed the page, handed it back to me, and walked away.

Over the years people would ask me what I ever did for David Bowie to make him thank me. It was the above-noted compliment.

— Jeffrey Morgan

Morgan relates the story of Burroughs telling him “You oughtta get Booey to sign the other half,” in his 2021 book Rock Critic Confidential, and that “When Booey showed up in town later that year on his Diamonds Dogs tour, I did just that”.  The book also features Morgan’s 1980 interview with Burroughs for Creem magazine.

The page, featuring a photograph by Terry O’Neal, is in very good condition, with endemic toning to the newsprint, light rippling at the top where it has been attached to a backing, and some lightning to Bowie’s still very clear signature.

The only item we have seen signed by both Bowie and Burroughs.

Page 9 1/2″ x 13″, and framed to 11 1/2″ x 14 ½”.
